Plan for Dissolution of Lighting Districts
July 19, 2018

TOWN OF MAINE

DESCRIPTIVE SUMMARY OF PROPOSED DISSOLUTION

OF LIGHTING DISTRICTS 1, 2 AND 3

The Town of Maine previously established Lighting Districts 1, 2 and 3 and assessed an additional tax to pay for the costs of maintaining and operating street lights in the Town.  After a detailed examination, the Town Board has determined that the budgets for the lighting districts are insufficient to cover the current and future costs of lighting.  The Town has calculated that the lighting district taxes would need to be increased significantly if the districts are not dissolved.  The Town of Maine General Fund has sufficient surplus monies to cover the entire costs of the lighting districts without the need to increase taxes.  There is no expected fiscal expense to the dissolution and all assets of the lighting districts will become assets of the Town of Maine, which will continue to service and maintain the street lights.

The Proposed Dissolution Plan is available for public review and examination at the Maine Town Hall, 12 Lewis Street, Maine, New York 13802 and http://www.townofmaine.org/.
